Attacks on minorities on the rise

The national media on a daily basis report the incidents of harassment of minorities across India. Muslims in Haryana’s Gurgaon faced yet more protests from right-wing groups on Friday while trying to offer namaz. Interruption of namaz in open spaces, particularly on government-owned land, has taken place every week for the past few months in the city, which is part of the national capital region. Apart from disrupting namaz, they were seen demanding that the Muslims shout ‘Bharat mata ki jai’. There have been several reports of attacks on Churches and schools run by the Christian missionaries all over India by right-wing groups.

On a daily basis, the attacks on minorities are rising at an alarming rate. The right-wing groups are increasingly getting emboldened due to a lack of action against them. The BJP-led government at the center and in the states it ruled has miserably failed to stop these attacks. The minority communities are living in constant fear. There is a growing division between the majority of Hindus and minorities in India. This does not augur well for India, which has been founded on the principle of secular values. There is an urgent need to stop these growing attacks on minorities. The government of the day should rise to the occasion and protect its citizens irrespective of which religion they belong to.
