{"id":12155,"date":"2017-12-12T01:15:41","date_gmt":"2017-12-11T19:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=12155"},"modified":"2017-12-12T01:15:41","modified_gmt":"2017-12-11T19:45:41","slug":"5-elephants-mowed-down-by-train-in-assam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2017\/12\/12\/5-elephants-mowed-down-by-train-in-assam\/","title":{"rendered":"5 elephants mowed down by train in Assam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>TEZPUR (Assam), Dec 11:<\/strong> Five elephants, including a pregnant one, were killed in the early hours of 10 December after a train hit a herd of seven tuskers at a tea garden in Sonitpur district, forest officials said.<br \/>\nThe incident took place at Bamgaon Tea Estate in the Chariduar police station area near Balipara at 1.30 am, they said.<br \/>\nThe herd was trying to cross railway tracks between the Rangapara and Dhalaibil stations when the Guwahati-Naharlagun Intercity Express hit them, Chief Conservator of Forest (Northern Range) P Shiv Kumar told PTI.<br \/>\nFour female elephants, including a pregnant one, and a male jumbo were killed on the spot, he said.<br \/>\nThe premature unborn calf came out from its mother&#8217;s belly due to the massive impact, Kumar said.<br \/>\nHe said forest officials were trying to locate the other two elephants, which were part of the herd.<br \/>\nThe dead elephants were cremated after post-mortem examination, Kumar said.<br \/>\nWild elephants often come out of the nearby Nameri National Park in search of food, he said.<br \/>\nIn the last couple of days, a herd of around 70 elephants strayed into the area, near the accident site, a forest official said.
