{"id":152625,"date":"2021-03-10T00:45:49","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T19:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=152625"},"modified":"2021-03-10T00:45:49","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T19:15:49","slug":"awareness-prog-on-bio-fortified-tuber-crops-held","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2021\/03\/10\/awareness-prog-on-bio-fortified-tuber-crops-held\/","title":{"rendered":"Awareness prog on bio-fortified tuber crops held"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>KHUPA, 9 Mar:<\/strong> The Anjaw KVK in collaboration with Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala)-based Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) on Monday organized a &#8216;nutritional awareness programme on rainbow diet-cum-capacity building for production of quality planting materials of bio-fortified tuber crop varieties&#8217; here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As many as 113 farmers and other stakeholders participated in the programme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The focus of the event was to build the capacity of the farmers of the district in scientific production of quality planting materials of bio-fortified sweet potato varieties bhu sona (orange-fleshed) and bhu Krishna (purple-fleshed) sweet potato varieties along with other tuber crops varieties released by the CTCRI,&#8221; the KVK informed in a release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the programme, Khupa DIET Principal SK Dey inaugurated a &#8216;Tuber crops ethnic food festival&#8217;, where women SHGs of Anjaw district displayed traditional foods made with tuber crops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While KVK Head Dr Santosh Kumar informed the gathering about the importance of organizing the training, DIET lecturer Lipu Eshi highlighted &#8220;the change in the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in today&#8217;s era&#8221; and encouraged womenfolk to become self-independent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CTCRI Principal Dr P Sethuraman Sivakumar explained the need to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies in the Northeast region and stressed the need for integrating bio-fortified foods with the traditional food system. He advocated the &#8216;rainbow diet&#8217; approach, focusing on tubers, for promoting health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He informed that the rainbow diet strategy focusing on children involves popularizing various foods like noodles, pasta, cakes and cookies prepared from bio-fortified varieties.
