{"id":169282,"date":"2021-08-17T00:18:43","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T18:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=169282"},"modified":"2021-08-17T00:18:43","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T18:48:43","slug":"china-ready-for-friendly-and-cooperative-ties-with-taliban-says-it-respects-rights-of-afghan-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2021\/08\/17\/china-ready-for-friendly-and-cooperative-ties-with-taliban-says-it-respects-rights-of-afghan-people\/","title":{"rendered":"China ready for &#8216;friendly and cooperative&#8217; ties with Taliban, says it respects rights of Afghan people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beijing, Aug 16 (AFP): China is ready to deepen &#8220;friendly and cooperative&#8221; relations with Afghanistan, a government spokeswoman said Monday, after the Taliban seized control of the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beijing has sought to maintain unofficial ties with the Taliban throughout the US&#8217; withdrawal from Afghanistan, which spurred an advance by the Islamist hardliners across the country that saw them capture the capital Kabul on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China shares a rugged 76-kilometre border with Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beijing has long feared Afghanistan could become a staging point for Muslim minority Uyghur separatists in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But a top-level Taliban delegation met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tianjin last month, promising that Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In exchange, China offered economic support and investment for Afghanistan&#8217;s reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Monday, China said it &#8220;welcomed&#8221; the chance to deepen ties with Afghanistan, a country that has for generations been coveted for its geo-strategic importance by bigger powers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope to develop good relations with China, and that they look forward to China&#8217;s participation in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan,&#8221; foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We welcome this. China respects the right of the Afghan people to independently determine their own destiny and is willing to continue to develop&#8230; friendly and cooperative relations with Afghanistan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hua called on the Taliban to &#8220;ensure a smooth transition&#8221; of power and keep its promises to negotiate the establishment of an &#8220;open and inclusive Islamic government&#8221; and ensure the safety of Afghans and foreign citizens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China&#8217;s embassy in Kabul remains operational, Hua said, although Beijing began evacuating Chinese citizens from the country months ago amid the deteriorating security situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement Monday, the embassy told Chinese citizens remaining in Afghanistan to &#8220;pay close attention to the security situation&#8221; and stay indoors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">US President Joe Biden promised a complete withdrawal of US troops by September 11, marking an end to two decades of war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Washington was left shocked by the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban&#8217;s sweeping advance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Taliban has sought to reassure the international community that Afghans should not fear them, and they will not take revenge against those who supported the US-backed alliance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The United States earlier released a statement with more than 65 nations urging the Taliban to let Afghans leave the country, warning of accountability for any abuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beijing, Aug 16 (AFP): China is ready to deepen &#8220;friendly and cooperative&#8221; relations with Afghanistan, a government spokeswoman said Monday, after the Taliban seized control of the country.
