{"id":173588,"date":"2021-10-07T00:11:10","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T18:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=173588"},"modified":"2021-10-07T00:11:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T18:41:10","slug":"nato-expels-8-undeclared-russian-intelligence-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2021\/10\/07\/nato-expels-8-undeclared-russian-intelligence-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO expels 8 &#8221;undeclared&#8221; Russian intelligence officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Brussels, Oct 6 (AP) NATO on Wednesday expelled eight members of Russia&#8217;s mission to the military alliance, saying that they were secretly working as intelligence officers and halved the size of Moscow&#8217;s team able to work at its headquarters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We can confirm that we have withdrawn the accreditation of eight members of the Russian Mission to NATO, who were undeclared Russian intelligence officers, a NATO official said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The official was speaking under customary condition of anonymity and can&#8217;t be named in public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NATO also reduced the number of positions that Russia can accredit people for at the organisation from 20 down to 10, the official said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No immediate clear explanation was given for the decision, which will take effect at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Relations between NATO and Russia have been increasingly strained since Moscow annexed Ukraine&#8217;s Crimean Peninsula in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two are at odds over Russia&#8217;s nuclear missile development, aerial intrusions into NATO airspace and the buzzing of allied ships by fighter planes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Official talks between them have been limited in recent years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NATO&#8217;s policy towards Russia remains consistent. We have strengthened our deterrence and defense in response to Russia&#8217;s aggressive actions, while at the same time we remain open for a meaningful dialogue, the official said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main forum for dialogue, the NATO-Russia Council, is stalled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;NATO proposed to hold another meeting of the NATO-Russia Council over 18 months ago, and that proposal stands.
