KHONSA, 17 Nov:<\/strong> The Nokte Women’s Association (NWA), in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW), conducted a one-day legal awareness program on ‘women’s right’ at the circuit house here in Tirap district on 16 November.<\/p>\n APSCW chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi urged all the women to join hands in getting women’s rights. She also highlighted the setting up of separate cells for women in the district and made the women aware about domestic violence.<\/p>\n Condemning the practices of polygamy in the society, she said “A strong legal law is needed to stop polygamy and domestic violence.”<\/p>\n Speaking on drug abuse, she warned about its consequences in the family.<\/p>\n Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Taro Mize urged the NWA to come forward to report to the district administration in case of domestic violence or any other form of abuse.<\/p>\n “Girl child education should be given more importance in the society,” the DC said, adding:\u00a0 “The girl child should be motivated to act as an agent of change in the society.”<\/p>\n Dy SP Khewang Khetey spoke about crimes against women and gender based violence and informed that “cases of crime against women are increasing, which is not a good sign.”<\/p>\n Earlier, APSCW Member Techi Hunmai spoke on the role of the women commission, and key resource person Phojam Aboh gave a power-point presentation on domestic violence and polygamy.<\/p>\n Advicate Senya Lowang imparted counseling on property rights in the context of Arunachal Pradesh and drug abuse, alcoholism and its impact on family”.<\/p>\n Among others, government officers and\u00a0 women representatives from several villages of Tirap district attended the programme.
