{"id":182357,"date":"2022-01-23T01:11:07","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T19:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=182357"},"modified":"2022-01-23T01:11:07","modified_gmt":"2022-01-22T19:41:07","slug":"r-day-mahatma-gandhis-favourite-hymn-dropped-from-beating-retreat-ceremony-cong-slams-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2022\/01\/23\/r-day-mahatma-gandhis-favourite-hymn-dropped-from-beating-retreat-ceremony-cong-slams-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"R-Day: Mahatma Gandhi&#8217;s favourite hymn dropped from beating retreat ceremony; Cong slams govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NEW DELHI, 22 Jan:<\/strong> One of Mahatma Gandhi&#8217;s favourite Christian hymns, &#8216;Abide with Me&#8217;, has been dropped from this year&#8217;s beating retreat ceremony on 29 January, according to a brochure released by the Indian Army on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;Abide with Me&#8217;, written by Scottish Anglican poet and hymnologist Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, has been part of the beating retreat ceremony since 1950.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year&#8217;s ceremony will conclude with &#8216;Sare Jahan Se Achha&#8217;, the brochure stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beating retreat used to end with the &#8216;Abide with Me&#8217; hymn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The brochure also listed 26 tunes that will be played at this year&#8217;s ceremony at Vijay Chowk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 26 tunes that will be played at this year&#8217;s ceremony include &#8216;Hey Kanchha&#8217;, &#8216;Channa Bilauri&#8217;, &#8216;Jai Janam Bhumi&#8217;, &#8216;Nritya Sarita&#8217;, &#8216;Vijay Josh&#8217;, &#8216;Kesaria Banna&#8217;, &#8216;Veer Siachen&#8217;, &#8216;Hathroi&#8217;, &#8216;Vijay Ghosh&#8217;, &#8216;Ladaakoo&#8217;, &#8216;Swadeshi&#8217;, &#8216;Amar Chattan&#8217;, &#8216;Golden Arrows&#8217; and &#8216;Swarn Jayanti&#8217;, according to the brochure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;Veer Sainik&#8217;, &#8216;Fanfare by Buglers, &#8216;INS India&#8217;, &#8216;Yashasvee&#8217;, &#8216;Jai Bharati&#8217;, &#8216;Kerala&#8217;, &#8216;Siki A Mole&#8217;, &#8216;Hind Ki Sena&#8217;, &#8216;Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja&#8217;, &#8216;Drummers Call&#8217; and &#8216;Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon&#8217; are also part of the 26 tunes that will be played on the evening of 29 January, the brochure noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beating retreat is a centuries-old military tradition dating from the days when troops disengaged from battle at sunset, it mentioned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As soon as the buglers sounded the retreat, the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms and withdrew from the battlefield, it added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cong slams govt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not unexpectedly, the Congress on Saturday attacked the government over the dropping of &#8216;Abide with Me&#8217; from this year&#8217;s beating retreat ceremony, alleging that it was another attempt to erase Gandhi&#8217;s legacy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed tweeted, &#8220;Mahatma Gandhi&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">favourite Hymn is dropped from the Republic Day Beating Retreat Ceremony. This is yet another attempt by this petty BJP govt to erase Bapu&#8217;s legacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;No action was taken against @SadhviPragya_MP for her comments against Gandhiji. This is BJP&#8217;s love for Godse!&#8221; she said in another tweet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another Congress spokesperson, Gourav Vallabh said there was an &#8220;ideological war&#8221; going on between thoughts of Gandhi and the thoughts of his assassin Nathuram Godse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Currently, the government that is governing is a strong believer in the thoughts of Godse. They don&#8217;t take any action on people who say bad words for Gandhiji. Government has time and again showed that it is against Gandhiji&#8217;s ideas,&#8221; he alleged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Congress leader Ajoy Kumar tweeted, &#8220;New India, No Amar Jyothi no Abide in Me during the Beating Retreat. Sicko&#8217;s BJP.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also attacked the government over the issue and asked if it is important to let go of precious traditions to rewrite &#8216;new India&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Amar Jawan Jyoti without the eternal flame. Beating Retreat ceremony without the Abide with Me tune. To rewrite new India, is it important to let go of precious traditions?&#8221; she said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;A confident nation does not need to wipe out remnants of the past. Anyway, here&#8217;s to the end to another one,&#8221; Chaturvedi added.
