{"id":185504,"date":"2022-03-01T00:25:39","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T18:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=185504"},"modified":"2022-03-01T00:25:39","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T18:55:39","slug":"33417-pigs-have-died-in-mizoram-due-to-african-swine-fever-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2022\/03\/01\/33417-pigs-have-died-in-mizoram-due-to-african-swine-fever-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"33,417 pigs have died in Mizoram due to African Swine Fever: Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aizawl, Feb 28 (PTI) Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Dr K Beichhua on Monday told the Assembly that 33,417 pigs have died due to the outbreak of a highly contagious African Swine Fever (ASF) in the state last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Replying to a query from V.L Zaithanzama of opposition Zoram People&#8217;s Movement (ZPM), Beichhua said a total of 10,910 pigs have also been culled to prevent further spread of ASF besides those claimed by the dreaded disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The monetary losses incurred on dead pigs by ASF is estimated to be more than Rs 60.82 crore, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beichhua said that the state government has sought compensation from the Centre for the culled pigs, while compensation of Rs 3,000 each for a dead pig has been sought from the state disaster management and rehabilitation department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the minister, the outbreak, as of now, is more or less controlled and contained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said that no pig death due to ASF has been reported since December last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beichhuah also informed the assembly that the state government has lifted a ban on the import of pigs from ASF free states on February 1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the imported pigs should be brought along with a healthy certificate and Common Swine Fever (CSF) vaccination certificate, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mizoram had banned the import of pigs from other states and neighbouring foreign countries for about 17 months between August 2020 and January 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first outbreak of ASF believed to be caused by pigs imported from Bangladesh was reported at Lungsen village in south Mizoram&#8217;s Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border on March 21 last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Later in mid-April, the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed that the pig deaths were due to ASF.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aizawl, Feb 28 (PTI) Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Dr K Beichhua on Monday told the Assembly that 33,417 pigs have died due to the outbreak of a highly contagious African Swine Fever (ASF) in the state last year.
