{"id":189193,"date":"2022-04-20T00:20:18","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T18:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=189193"},"modified":"2022-04-20T00:20:18","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T18:50:18","slug":"us-officials-heading-to-solomons-over-china-pact-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2022\/04\/20\/us-officials-heading-to-solomons-over-china-pact-worries\/","title":{"rendered":"US officials heading to Solomons over China pact worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">WELLINGTON, New Zealand , 19 Apr (AP): \u2014 The U.S. is sending two top officials to the Solomon Islands following a visit last week by an Australian senator over concerns that China could establish a military presence in the South Pacific island nation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The White House said Monday that later this week, Kurt Campbell, the National Security Council Indo-Pacific coordinator, and Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, will lead a delegation of U.S. government officials to the Solomon Islands, and will also visit Fiji and Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin on Tuesday said Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Solomon Islands counterpart, Jeremiah Manele, officially signed a security agreement \u201cthe other day.\u201d No specific date was given.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A draft of the pact, which was leaked online, said Chinese warships could stop in the Solomon Islands and China could send police and armed forces there \u201cto assist in maintaining social order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wang told reporters at a daily briefing that the agreement covers \u201cmaintaining social order,\u201d along with protecting lives and property, providing humanitarian assistance and responding to natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are committed to helping the Solomon Islands to strengthen its capacity building to maintain national security,\u201d Wang said. He said the agreement does not seek to supersede the South Pacific nation\u2019s security ties with other nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Solomon Islands has sought to downplay the significance of the agreement and says it won\u2019t lead to China establishing a military base there, but many neighboring countries and Western nations remain worried.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said the agreement could destabilize the Solomon Islands and would set a concerning precedent for the wider Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDespite the Solomon Islands government\u2019s comments, the broad nature of the security agreement leaves open the door for the deployment of P.R.C. (People\u2019s Republic of China) military forces to the Solomon Islands,\u201d Price said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. trip comes after a visit to the Solomon Islands last week by Australian Sen. Zed Seselja, the minister for international development and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seselja said he met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and asked him to abandon the Chinese agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have asked Solomon Islands respectfully to consider not signing the agreement and to consult the Pacific family in the spirit of regional openness and transparency, consistent with our region\u2019s security frameworks,\u201d Seselja said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Solomon Islands portrayed the meeting in a more positive light, saying Sogavare and Seselja held productive discussions regarding the security concerns of the Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Jeremiah Manele about Washington\u2019s plan to reopen an embassy in the capital, Honiara.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The announcement of the reopening of the embassy, which has been closed since 1993, came in February before the security pact came to light, but amid already growing concerns about Chinese influence in the strategically important country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WELLINGTON, New Zealand , 19 Apr (AP): \u2014 The U.S. is sending two top officials to the Solomon Islands following a visit last week by an Australian senator over concerns that China could establish a military presence in the South Pacific island nation.
