{"id":191290,"date":"2022-05-21T00:17:25","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T18:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=191290"},"modified":"2022-05-21T00:17:25","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T18:47:25","slug":"un-18-million-facing-severe-hunger-in-west-africas-sahel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2022\/05\/21\/un-18-million-facing-severe-hunger-in-west-africas-sahel\/","title":{"rendered":"UN: 18 million facing severe hunger in West Africa\u2019s Sahel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">GENEVA, May 20 (AP) \u2014 The U.N. is warning that 18 million people in Africa\u2019s Sahel region face severe hunger in the next three months, citing the impacts of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, the coronavirus pandemic, climate-induced shocks and rising costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hunger crisis may press increased numbers of people to migrate out of the affected areas, said a U.N. official.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The largest number of people are at risk of severe hunger across the region since 2014, and four countries \u2014 Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Niger \u2014 are facing \u201calarming levels,\u201d with nearly 1.7 million people facing emergency levels of food insecurity there, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parts of the Sahel region, a vast territory stretching across the south of the Sahara Desert, have faced their worst agricultural production in more than a decade, and food shortages could worsen as the lean season arrives in late summer, Tomson Phiri, spokesman for the U.N.\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize-winning World Food Program, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe situation is definitely going to get worse before it gets better,\u201d he told reporters in Geneva. \u201cWe may see more people trying to make ends meet by migrating: It\u2019s a very, very likely possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many people from the region are among migrants who seek to travel north to Europe in hopes of economic opportunity, more stability and safety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cA combination of violence, insecurity, deep poverty and record-high food prices is exacerbating malnutrition and driving millions to the fringes of survival,\u201d Martin Griffiths, the head of OCHA, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe recent spike in food prices driven by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is threatening to turn a food security crisis into a humanitarian disaster,\u201d he said.
