LIVERPOOL, 12 Sep: Liverpool manager J\u00fcrgen Klopp said he expects the team\u2019s fans to show \u201cthe right respect\u201d if UEFA accepts a request by the club for a minute\u2019s silence to be held before the Champions League match against Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
\nLiverpool supporters booed the national anthem \u2014 which was formerly \u201cGod Save the Queen\u201d \u2014 when it was played ahead of the FA Cup final in May and the Community Shield in July because of what is perceived to be a long-held opposition toward the establishment.
\nThere have been periods of silence before sporting fixtures and events around the country since the death of the queen at the age of 96 on Thursday.
\nKlopp said it would be \u201cthe right thing to do\u201d for Liverpool to make the tribute and referred to how his club\u2019s fans conducted themselves during a Premier League match against fierce rival Manchester United in April, which took place a day after the death of one of Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s new-born twins.
\nThere was a show of support from both teams\u2019 fans for Ronaldo, with Liverpool\u2019s supporters making a brief rendition of their club anthem \u2014 \u201cYou\u2019ll Never Walk Alone\u201d \u2014 amid applause around Anfield.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t think our people need any advice from me for showing respect,\u201d Klopp said. \u201cThere are plenty of examples where people show exactly the right respect.
\n\u201cOne, surprisingly, and I was really proud of that moment, was when we played Man United after a very sad situation in Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s family. That is what I expect. For me, it is clear it is what we have to do.\u201d
\nLiverpool fans booed the national anthem in the 1980s and during what some refer to as the \u201cmanaged decline\u201d of the city during the tenure of the Conservative Party-led government. Deepening those feelings was the failing of the government following the Hillsborough Stadium disaster and many from the left-leaning city continue to feel let down by the state.
\nLiverpool fans jeered the national anthem and the introduction of Prince William, the queen\u2019s grandson, before the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
\nKlopp was asked how he felt when he heard about the death of the queen.
\n\u201cI\u2019m 55 years old and she\u2019s the only queen I ever knew,\u201d the German coach said. \u201cAs far as I know \u2014 I don\u2019t know her \u2014 but the things we have seen of her, she was a really warm, nice, beloved lady. That\u2019s all I need to know.
\n\u201cBecause of my personal experience \u2014 and it\u2019s not what I think, it\u2019s what people think who are much closer to her \u2014 I respect their grief a lot and that\u2019s why I will show my respect tomorrow night with a minute of silence if it goes through.\u201d (AP)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
