\nBERLIN, 18 Oct: Germany must avoid repeating with China the mistakes that it made in its relationship with Russia over recent years, the German foreign minister said Tuesday.
\nAnnalena Baerbock said Germany must face up to a \u201ccompetition of systems\u201d between countries that believe in international law and cooperation and authoritarian regimes.
\n\u201cWe must first of all learn from the mistakes of our Russia policy of recent decades,\u201d Baerbock said at a foreign policy forum in Berlin organized by the Koerber Foundation think tank. \u201cI say very clearly that one-sided economic dependence exposes us to political blackmail.\u201d
\n\u201cAs far as Russia is concerned, that\u2019s spilt milk now,\u201d Baerbock said, acknowledging that Germany ignored warnings from eastern European partners about its dependence on Russian energy. \u201cWe must ensure that we don\u2019t make such a mistake again, and that means that we will have to take account of this more strongly in our policy toward China.\u201d
\nShe noted that a \u201cnational security strategy\u201d being drawn up by Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s government will include a German China strategy, which will be embedded in a European Union strategy.
\nGerman governments over the past two decades strengthened economic links with Russia \u2014 particularly in the energy sector, despite distaste in eastern Europe for gas pipeline projects linking Russia directly with Germany. Berlin has scrambled to find replacement gas supplies as relations nosedived following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine; Russia hasn\u2019t delivered gas to Germany since the end of August.
\nGerman companies have invested heavily in China in recent years, and China is one of Germany\u2019s biggest trading partners. (AP)<\/p>\n
