{"id":204965,"date":"2022-11-16T00:24:59","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T18:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=204965"},"modified":"2022-11-16T00:24:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-15T18:54:59","slug":"mixed-response-to-assam-bandh-demanding-st-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2022\/11\/16\/mixed-response-to-assam-bandh-demanding-st-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Mixed response to Assam bandh demanding ST status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nGuwahati, Nov 15 (PTI) A 12-hour Assam bandh called by six communities demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status drew a mixed response on Tuesday, with normal life being disrupted in parts of the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A number of bandh supporters were also arrested by police, officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The strike was called jointly by different organisations of Tai Ahom, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Adivasi, Matak and Moran communities, who have been demanding ST status.<br \/>\nReacting to the shutdown call, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said people have the right to protest in a democratic country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that his cabinet colleagues were regularly in touch with the leaders of the communities over their demands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bandh evoked mixed response in parts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat and Lakhimpur districts, as per reports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Supporters of the strike burnt tyres on the roads, while commercial establishments remained mostly closed and public transport was thin, the officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The protesters warned of intensifying the agitation if the communities were not accorded the ST status at the earliest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Police said adequate measures were taken to thwart any untoward incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guwahati, Nov 15 (PTI) A 12-hour Assam bandh called by six communities demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status drew a mixed response on Tuesday, with normal life being disrupted in parts of the state.
