The proposed aid package will be put to a vote in parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that overall, the European Union\u2019s economic, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine now amounts to almost 50 billion euros. Earlier this month, the EU said it would unveil its 10th package of sanctions against Russia on the Feb. 24 anniversary of the war. It will target technology used by Russia\u2019s war machine, among other things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway, which isn\u2019t an EU member, gave Ukraine more than 10 billion kroner ($1 billion) in civilian and military aid last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt will lead to an increased use of oil money,\u201d Gahr St\u00f8re said, adding that he\u2019s hoping \u201ca large majority\u201d in the Norwegian parliament would approve the aid package. A parliamentary majority is expected to pass the proposal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSupporting Ukraine is supporting a people experiencing war, but it is also support for our fundamental security,\u201d Gahr St\u00f8re told a press conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are showing the Ukrainians that we will support them for a long time,\u201d adding it would make \u201cit possible to plan better so that the money is used where the needs are greatest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a conference earlier Monday in Oslo, Gahr St\u00f8re spoke of a new Iron Curtain dividing east and west.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe implications for Europe are hard to overestimate. A Russia in self-imposed isolation is bad news for of us.\u201d He also said that \u201cUkraine\u2019s needs are immense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government in Oslo also proposed to increase the aid to countries that are hit by the war in Ukraine by 5 billion kroner ($490 million) -\u2013 that money should be used on humanitarian aid and food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week, the Norwegian government said that oil profits should go toward funding more aid to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway is one of Europe\u2019s largest fossil-fuel exporters, and the conflict in Ukraine has boosted its gas revenues.
