GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) \u2014 A nighttime fire raced through a school dormitory in Guyana early Monday, killing at least 20 students and injuring several others, authorities said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a horrific incident. It\u2019s tragic. It\u2019s painful,\u201d President Irfaan Ali said, adding that his government was mobilizing all resources to care for the children.<\/p>\n
Several other students were treated for injuries, and at least six of them were flown to the capital for treatment, the government said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The fire broke out shortly after midnight in the dormitory building of a secondary school in the southwestern border town of Mahdia, 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of the capital, Georgetown, the government said.<\/p>\n
The school serves mostly indigenous children aged 12 through 18, according to National Security Adviser Gerald Gouveia. He said it was too early to speculate what might have caused the fire, adding that heavy thunderstorms in the area posed a challenge to those responding by air.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a battle for us,\u201d he said. \u201cThe pilots were very brave, very determined.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that the government and emergency responders \u201cmade a gigantic effort\u201d to save as many people as possible.<\/p>\n
Ali said officials were contacting parents and mobilizing psychologists to help deal with those affected by the fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot imagine the pain right now of the parents,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a major disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local newspaper Stabroek News reported that the fire broke out in a girls\u2019 dormitory.<\/p>\n
Opposition lawmaker Natasha Singh-Lewis called for an in-depth investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to understand how this most horrific and deadly incident occurred and take all necessary measures to prevent such a tragedy from happening again in the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
