{"id":228435,"date":"2023-11-14T00:20:45","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T18:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=228435"},"modified":"2023-11-14T00:20:45","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T18:50:45","slug":"eu-nations-condemn-hamas-for-what-they-describe-as-use-of-hospitals-civilians-as-human-shields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2023\/11\/14\/eu-nations-condemn-hamas-for-what-they-describe-as-use-of-hospitals-civilians-as-human-shields\/","title":{"rendered":"EU nations condemn Hamas for what they describe as use of hospitals, civilians as \u2018human shields\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BRUSSELS, 13 Nov (AP) \u2014 The 27 European Union nations have jointly condemned Hamas for what they described as the use of hospitals and civilians as \u201chuman shields\u201d in the war against Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said Monday that at the same time the bloc asked Israel \u201cfor maximum restraint in targeting in order to avoid human casualties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a meeting of the bloc\u2019s foreign affairs ministers, Borrell brandished a statement he issued on behalf of the 27 nations as a show of unity following weeks of often contrasting statements on how the group should address the Israel-Hamas war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou know how difficult it has been the last times, after the vote in the United Nations, where countries were voted in different ways, to present a completely united approach,\u201d Borrell said. Only hours after EU leaders professed unity over the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 28, the member states were totally split in a vote on a General Assembly resolution calling for humanitarian truces in Gaza leading to a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, though, the EU nations said in a statement they join \u201ccalls for immediate pauses in hostilities and the establishment of humanitarian corridors, including through increased capacity at border crossings and through a dedicated maritime route, so that humanitarian aid can safely reach the population of Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And they reiterated their \u201ccall on Hamas for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. It is crucial that the International Committee of the Red Cross is granted access to the hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And as a key tenent, it said that \u201cthe EU condemns the use of hospitals and civilians as human shields by Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins said that \u201cHamas is unfortunately using civilian infrastructure and civilians as shields against the Israeli Defense Forces. So the situation absolutely not black and white.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that \u201cno one in the West is interested in supporting any terrorist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The nations stopped short of calling for a cease-fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said she understood \u201cthe impetus for a cease-fire.\u201d But she said those who seek one must answer questions \u201cfor example, how can the demand for a cease-fire, acutely, and now in this terrible situation guarantee that Israel\u2019s security is assured?
