\nGENEVA, 26 Feb: U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says combatants in places such as Congo, Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine and Sudan are turning a \u201cblind eye\u201d to international law as he made a plea for greater respect for human rights and peace around the world.
\nSpeaking as the U.N.\u2019s top human rights body opened its latest session, Guterres warned Monday that the world is becoming \u201cless safe by the day.\u201d
\n\u201cOur world is changing at warp speed,\u201d he told the Human Rights Council. \u201cThe multiplication of conflicts is causing unprecedented suffering. But human rights are a constant.\u201d
\nThe U.N. chief said attacks on human rights take many forms, and reiterated his frequent calls for debt relief for some of the world\u2019s poorest countries and greater spending to fight climate change. He defended UNRWA, the agency for Palestinian refugees, as the \u201cbackbone\u201d of aid efforts in Gaza at a time when top Israeli authorities have called for its dismantling.
\nThe U.N. human rights chief, Volker T\u00fcrk, also lashed out at \u201cattempts to underm-ine the legitimacy and work\u201d of the U.N. and its affiliates.
