{"id":241335,"date":"2024-05-31T01:59:05","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T20:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=241335"},"modified":"2024-05-31T01:59:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T20:29:05","slug":"cbi-takes-over-probe-into-assam-mlaya-border-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2024\/05\/31\/cbi-takes-over-probe-into-assam-mlaya-border-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"CBI takes over probe into Assam-M&#8217;laya border violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NEW DELHI, 30 May:<\/strong> The CBI has taken over investigation into the killing of five Meghalaya residents and one forest guard of Assam 18 months ago at the two states&#8217; disputed border after a truck allegedly laden with illegally felled timber was intercepted by Assam&#8217;s forest guards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The state governments of Meghalaya and Assam had referred the probe to the CBI in February and March, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The central probe agency has re-registered two FIRs, filed by the Assam<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0and the Meghalaya Police after the incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The incident had taken place on 22 November, 2022,when a truck was allegedly intercepted in Assam&#8217;s West Karbi Anglong district by a team of the forest department, officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Assam Police officials, a mob from the Meghalaya side later attacked the forest guards and policemen from the state, which led to firing by the Assam side to control the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five of the six killed were residents of Meghalaya&#8217;s Mukroh village in West Jaintia district and one was a forest guard of Assam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Assam and Meghalaya have a longstanding dispute in 12 stretches along their borders. The two northeastern states signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2022 in the presence of union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi towards ending the dispute in six of them.
