{"id":241629,"date":"2024-06-05T00:30:54","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T19:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=241629"},"modified":"2024-06-05T00:30:54","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T19:00:54","slug":"slovenia-lawmakers-convene-for-a-vote-on-the-recognition-of-a-palestinian-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2024\/06\/05\/slovenia-lawmakers-convene-for-a-vote-on-the-recognition-of-a-palestinian-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Slovenia lawmakers convene for a vote on the recognition of a Palestinian state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, 4 Jun (AP) \u2014 Slovenia\u2019s lawmakers on Tuesday convened for a vote on the recognition of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government endorsed a motion last week to recognize a Palestinian state, and sent the proposal to parliament for final approval, which is needed for the decision to take effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe started talking with our allies about the recognition of Palestine in February this year,\u201d Prime Minister Robert Golob told lawmakers. \u201cAt the time, the assessment was \u2014 the time is not yet ripe &#8230; we warned that we, Europe, have a &#8230; duty to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Slovenia\u2019s move came just days after Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized a Palestinian state, which was condemned by Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ruling coalition led by Golob holds a comfortable majority in Slovenia\u2019s 90-member assembly and the vote is expected to be a formality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Golob also evoked Slovenia\u2019s independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 in his remarks to parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe Slovenians have dreamed of this right for 1,000 years. We got it 33 years ago,\u201d Golob said. \u201cUnfortunately, the Palestinian nation has not yet received this right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than 140 countries recognize a Palestinian state \u2014 more than two-thirds of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSlovenia will join them,\u201d Golob said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Slovenia\u2019s main opposition party, the Slovenian Democratic Party, opposes the recognition. The right-wing party has demanded a referendum on the issue that would delay the vote, but on Tuesday withdrew the bid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Slovenia first began the recognition process in early May, but said it would wait until the situation in the ongoing Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza improved. Golob has explained he was speeding up the process in reaction to Israel\u2019s latest attacks on Rafah, which have caused more than 1 million Palestinians to flee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Israel launched the assault following the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack in which militants stormed across the Gaza border into Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Israel\u2019s air and land attacks have since killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry, which doesn\u2019t distinguish between combatants and civilians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, 4 Jun (AP) \u2014 Slovenia\u2019s lawmakers on Tuesday convened for a vote on the recognition of a Palestinian state.
