{"id":241843,"date":"2024-06-08T00:36:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T19:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=241843"},"modified":"2024-06-08T00:36:41","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T19:06:41","slug":"nearly-1500-pigs-died-of-asf-in-mizoram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2024\/06\/08\/nearly-1500-pigs-died-of-asf-in-mizoram\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 1,500 pigs died of ASF in Mizoram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>AIZAWL, 7 Jun:<\/strong> African swine fever (ASF) continued to wreak havoc in piggeries in Mizoram, killing nearly 1,500 pigs and piglets since January, an official of the state animal husbandry &amp; veterinary department said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The outbreak has currently affected 80 villages or localities across seven districts, she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She said that 64 pigs died while 235 were culled on Thursday. &#8220;At least 1,488 pigs have died due to ASF, and 3,002 culled to prevent the dreaded swine fever since January,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The outbreak was first reported at Lungsen village in south Mizoram&#8217;s Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Officials believe that the outbreak has been caused by pigs illegally imported from the neighbouring country. Mizoram shares a 318-km-long international border with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The animal husbandry &amp; veterinary department said that 33,417 pigs died due to ASF in 2021, 12,795 in 2022, and 1,039 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It said that 12,568 pigs had been culled in 2021 to prevent the spread of ASF, 11,686 in 2022, and 928 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The state government&#8217;s ban on importing pigs from outside continues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The animal husbandry &amp; veterinary department has also put up strict measures, including prohibition of import or export of pigs from the infected zones.(PTI)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AIZAWL, 7 Jun: African swine fever (ASF) continued to wreak havoc in piggeries in Mizoram, killing nearly 1,500 pigs and piglets since January, an official of the state animal husbandry &amp; veterinary department said.
