{"id":245866,"date":"2024-08-08T00:03:30","date_gmt":"2024-08-07T18:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=245866"},"modified":"2024-08-08T00:03:30","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T18:33:30","slug":"turkey-to-submit-request-to-join-genocide-case-against-israel-in-un-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2024\/08\/08\/turkey-to-submit-request-to-join-genocide-case-against-israel-in-un-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey to submit request to join genocide case against Israel in UN court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ANKARA, Turkey, 7 Aug (AP) \u2014 Turkey will file a request with a U.N. court on Wednesday to join South Africa\u2019s genocide lawsuit against Israel, a Turkish official said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turkey\u2019s ambassador to the the Netherlands will submit a declaration of intervention to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turkey, one of the fiercest critics of Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, will become the latest nation to seek to participate in the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNo country in the world is above international law,\u201d Keceli said in a post on X. \u201cThe case at the International Court of Justice is extremely important in terms of ensuring that the crimes committed by Israel do not go unpunished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Israel of genocide, called for it to be punished in international courts and criticized Western nations for backing Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In May, Turkey suspended trade with Israel, citing its assault on Gaza. In contrast to Western nations that have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, Erdogan has commended the group, calling it a liberation movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">South Africa brought a case to the International Court of Justice late last year, accusing Israel of violating the genocide convention through its military operations in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Israel has strongly rejected accusations of genocide and has argued that the war in Gaza is a legitimate defensive action against Hamas militants for their Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and took 250 hostages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Spain and Palestinian officials have sought to join the case. The court\u2019s decision on their requests is still pending.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If admitted to the case, the countries would be able to make written submissions and speak at public hearings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Preliminary hearings have already been held in the genocide case against Israel, but the court is expected to take years to reach a final decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keceli, meanwhile, called for the immediate implementations of precautionary measures ordered by the court, including a halt to military offensive and an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former allies Turkey and Israel have experienced a volatile relationship since Erdogan took power in 2003, marked by periods of severe friction and reconciliation.
