{"id":255058,"date":"2025-01-11T00:26:31","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T18:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=255058"},"modified":"2025-01-11T00:26:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T18:56:31","slug":"cm-criticises-anti-dam-activists-for-spreading-misinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2025\/01\/11\/cm-criticises-anti-dam-activists-for-spreading-misinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"CM criticises anti-dam activists for spreading &#8216;misinformation&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>AALO, 10 Jan:<\/strong> Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday criticised anti-dam activists opposing the proposed Siang upper multipurpose project (SUMP).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He accused those activists of confusing the people without providing accurate information about the project&#8217;s benefits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said this in an event organised by the Galo Welfare Society (GWS) to mark its silver jubilee inPaya near Aalo in West Siang district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maintaining that the SUMP is not only a hydropower project, Khandu said it is a multipurpose project of national importance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said that the project is not all about generating hydropower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Hydropower generation is a by-product of the project. The real objective of the project is to maintain the natural flow of the Siang river and mitigate flood risks,&#8221; Khandu said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the concerns raised by the locals, the chief minister pointed out that the project would not go ahead if people are against it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The state government will not take up the project if the people are against it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He, however, appealed to people to come forward and hold discussions about the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chief minister said that China has already approved the construction of the world&#8217;s largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, close to the Indian border.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If China releases water from the dam, it will have severe consequences in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I will not take the blame if the project is not allowed,&#8221; said Khandu, adding that the blame should entirely be on those opposing the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He appealed to the Adi Bane Kebang, Galo Welfare Society and Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum to discuss the project and find an amicable solution.(PTI)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AALO, 10 Jan: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday criticised anti-dam activists opposing the proposed Siang upper multipurpose project (SUMP).
