{"id":261998,"date":"2025-04-04T00:16:45","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T18:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=261998"},"modified":"2025-04-04T00:16:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T18:46:45","slug":"nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognisance-of-assam-journalists-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2025\/04\/04\/nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognisance-of-assam-journalists-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of Assam journalist&#8217;s detention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>GUWAHATI, 3 Apr:<\/strong> The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that a journalist of a digital news portal was detained after a dharna before a bank here, which he had gone to cover, and issued notice to the Assam director general of police for a detailed report within four weeks, an official release said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NHRC took cognisance of a media report that on 25 March, 2025 in Guwahati, a journalist of a digital news portal was called by the Panbazar police and detained after a dharna in front of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd, which he had gone to cover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reportedly, the journalist had questioned the managing director of the bank on the alleged financial irregularities, though no reason was cited for his detention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The commission observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise the issue of violation of the journalist&#8217;s human rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Assam director general of police, calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks, the release said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to media reports carried on 25 March, the protestors were demanding a high-level inquiry into the alleged financial irregularities in the management of the bank and strict action against those responsible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chief reporter of the digital portal &#8216;The Crosscurrent&#8217;, Dilwar Hussain Mozumder, was arrested at midnight of 25 March after being detained for several hours at the police station but was granted bail the next day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was, however, rearrested in connection with another case filed by the bank&#8217;s managing director for allegedly trying to steal bank documents the next day after the bail surety for the case was submitted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Guwahati court granted him bail in the second case on 28 March and he was released the next day.
