Monday Musing<\/strong><\/h2>\n

[ Tongam Rina ]<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

I saw a portrait of smiling Hailyang. Was it a pic taken on his wedding, or last Myoko?<\/p>\n

The women surrounding the kitchen.<\/p>\n

This must have been how it was each time<\/p>\n

when he came home, surrounded by his loved ones, in that warm fireplace.<\/p>\n

This time, not in person – he came home as a portrait.<\/p>\n

Women in silence, in tears,<\/p>\n

in prayers.<\/p>\n

That calm picture screams of pain\u2026 and of what should not have been.<\/p>\n

The hearth without the fire\u2026<\/p>\n

extinguished before time<\/p>\n

by hatred and terror in a faraway land.<\/p>\n

There were flowers<\/p>\n

over the white sheet<\/p>\n

and melting candles.<\/p>\n

What should have been<\/p>\n

a celebratory bouquet –<\/p>\n

what’s left<\/p>\n

is petals now<\/p>\n

on the table,<\/p>\n

and a wreath of marigold.<\/p>\n

Calm-<\/p>\n

a calm valley shattered by tears and grief.<\/p>\n

Words are always empty.<\/p>\n

This time it’s emptier and hollow,<\/p>\n

but how the family,<\/p>\n

how friends<\/p>\n

must be longing<\/p>\n

to hear one word from him.<\/p>\n

How do we mourn<\/p>\n

without anger and questions?<\/p>\n

There will never be an answer.<\/p>\n

How do you console a wife<\/p>\n

who lost everything<\/p>\n

in what should have been<\/p>\n

a moment to talk,<\/p>\n

to tell friends and family<\/p>\n

what a splendid meadow it was?<\/p>\n

The void of a lifetime.<\/p>\n

How do you console<\/p>\n

a parent<\/p>\n

who is living the nightmare<\/p>\n

of every parent\u2026<\/p>\n

to bury a child?<\/p>\n

How do you console<\/p>\n

a sibling<\/p>\n

who just lost someone<\/p>\n

who needed no explanation,<\/p>\n

who just knew your heart<\/p>\n

just by hearing one word you spoke?<\/p>\n

How do you console a village,<\/p>\n

That nurtured a child with love and pride,<\/p>\n

watched him become<\/p>\n

a protector of the skies?<\/p>\n

How do you console a state<\/p>\n

confused and hurt-<\/p>\n

that you could be killed<\/p>\n

for your religion,<\/p>\n

for who you worked for?<\/p>\n

There is darkness,<\/p>\n

all around.<\/p>\n

But could we gather<\/p>\n

a moment<\/p>\n

and tell him<\/p>\n

that he did a good job?<\/p>\n

And that he will continue<\/p>\n

to inspire generations<\/p>\n

to serve this nation?<\/p>\n

And that he will always be loved<\/p>\n

and tucked in our hearts,<\/p>\n

in the pages of history<\/p>\n

of our state –<\/p>\n

for he was<\/p>\n

a worthy son<\/p>\n

who protected till the end.<\/p>\n

You never wavered or withered, Hailyang.<\/p>\n

You live forever, in our hearts and memories.<\/p>\n
