{"id":265964,"date":"2025-06-21T00:52:36","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T19:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=265964"},"modified":"2025-06-21T00:52:36","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T19:22:36","slug":"siang-da-launches-cotpa-enforcement-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2025\/06\/21\/siang-da-launches-cotpa-enforcement-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Siang DA launches COTPA enforcement drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BOLENG, 20 Jun<\/strong>: In an effort to curb tobacco use and enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, the Siang district administration has launched a series of awareness-cum-enforcement drives in the district through active block-level anti-drug committees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Boleng, a team of officials led by EAC Shanti Mize conducted an unannounced raid on targeted shops found violating Section 6 of the COTPA, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several shopkeepers who were found violating the provisions of the Act were penalized, and the tobacco items seized during the raids were destroyed on the spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Rumgong, ADC Kesang P Goiba spearheaded an awareness and enforcement campaign that included a coordination meeting with the District School Safety Squad, education officials, and teaching staff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Awareness sessions were conducted for students and local vendors, highlighting the health risk involved in tobacco consumption and the importance of compliance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Kaying, a similar drive was carried out by the block anti-drug team comprising EAC Pooza Sonam, police officials, ArSRLM representatives, BRCC, CRCC, and members of the ABK and ABAK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The team sensitized the public to Section 6 of COTPA, and urged the people to ensure community-level vigilance to protect school zones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pangin town also witnessed a coordinated raid and awareness drive led by Town Magistrate Niyang Pertin, with support from Medical Superintendent Dr Tonu Taki and the officer-in-charge of the Pangin police station.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Violating shops were penalized, and tobacco products were confiscated and destroyed. Awareness sessions were also held for students and vendors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon reaffirmed the district&#8217;s commitment to strict COTPA enforcement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;These drives are not just about penalties &#8211; they are about creating lasting awareness and behavioural change. Community participation and inter-departmental coordination are key (to achieve the goal of tobacco-free Siang),&#8221; he said, and urged the citizens and vendors to support the vision of a tobacco-free district.
