TEZU, 2 May:<\/strong> Lohit Deputy Commissioner Kesang Ngurup Damo said that dairy farming has immense potential to strengthen the rural economy, generate employment, and promote self-reliance among farmers.<\/p>\n The DC said that hygienic and branded milk is an important part of a healthy diet and can also contribute significantly to the local economy and sustainable livelihood.<\/p>\n The DC was speaking at the launch of the seventh round of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccination programme under the National Animal Disease Control Programme at the dairy farm of Brantalum Tamai, a progressive farmer owning 50 dairy animals, here on Saturday.<\/p>\n The vaccination programme will be carried out across the state from 2 May to 20 June.<\/p>\n Describing the launch as an important day for livestock farmers of the district, he urged livestock owners to cooperate fully with the Veterinary Department, so that Lohit district can contribute meaningfully towards the national goal of eradicating FMD by 2030.<\/p>\n Lohit DVO Dr Naku Taloh highlighted the significance of the Government of India initiative aimed at eradicating FMD from the country by 2030. He explained the aims and objectives of the vaccination programme, and informed that the campaign is being conducted as part of a systematic national effort to control and eliminate FMD.<\/p>\n Dr Taloh appealed to all livestock owners, PRI members, progressive farmers and the general public to extend full cooperation to the vaccination teams whenever they visit villages for immunisation of livestock.<\/p>\n He urged residents to register their livestock in order to avail of various facilities and benefits provided by the Government of India.<\/p>\n He also requested progressive farmers, PRI representatives and SHG members to actively participate in the awareness programme and mobilise livestock owners to ensure complete vaccination coverage. He informed that the programme will cover all the villages of Lohit district.<\/p>\n As part of the launch programme, activities such as ear-tagging of cattle, pre-vaccination serum collection, vaccination, distribution of FMD awareness leaflets, and real-time data entry on the NDLM portal were taken up. The programme also focused on creating awareness among livestock farmers and encouraging them to actively cooperate with vaccination teams during household visits as per the notified schedule.<\/p>\n Disease Investigation Officer (EZ) Dr Navjeevan Taloh said that FMD is a highly contagious viral disease and one of the most economically devastating diseases affecting livestock. She stated that the disease can reduce milk production by up to 50 per cent, thereby directly affecting the income of dairy farmers.<\/p>\n She informed that O, A and Asia-1 types of FMD virus are prevalent in India. In unvaccinated herds, morbidity can be as high as 100 percent, while mortality may range from 1 to 5 percent in adult animals and up to 20 percent in young animals.<\/p>\n She also briefed the gathering on animal identification through barcode-based ear tagging and Aadhaar-based owner registration. She informed that vaccination is provided free of cost by the government, and appealed to livestock owners to ensure that all eligible animals are vaccinated.<\/p>\n Highlighting the progress achieved so far, the officer stated that FMD outbreaks have reduced from 132 in 2019 to 32 in 2025, and added that the objective of the ongoing programme is to bring the number of outbreaks down to zero.<\/p>\n \n Meanwhile, the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Department of Lower Subansiri district launched the 7th biannual round of the FMD vaccination programme at the Siiro Dairy Development Farm on Saturday.<\/p>\n The health drive, attended by SDO Hage Tarung and local zilla parishad members, serves as a localised push towards the Government of India’s national mandate to completely eradicate FMD by the year 2030.<\/p>\n District Veterinary Officer Dr Bamin Tacho and SDO Hage Tarung emphasised that these free vaccinations are the most effective defence against socioeconomic diseases, including FMD, classical swine fever (CSF), and peste des petits ruminants (PPR), which frequently threaten the financial stability of rural livestock farmers.<\/p>\n To ensure that no household is overlooked, local leaders Hibu Obing and Kago Kampu pledged to mobilise public support through PRI forums, while the administration urged the involvement of panchayats and GBs to spread awareness.<\/p>\n The launch was marked by vaccination of 12 cattle and the collection of pre-vaccination serum samples for laboratory analysis, ensuring a scientifically monitored start to a campaign designed to safeguard the district’s agricultural future.
