{"id":7933,"date":"2017-11-09T00:06:36","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T18:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/?p=7933"},"modified":"2017-11-09T00:06:36","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T18:36:36","slug":"dtcc-meet-stresses-on-strict-implementation-of-cotpa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arunachaltimes.in\/index.php\/2017\/11\/09\/dtcc-meet-stresses-on-strict-implementation-of-cotpa\/","title":{"rendered":"DTCC meet stresses on strict implementation of COTPA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SEPPA, Nov 8:<\/strong> The district level coordination committee meeting convened by District Tobacco Control Cell of East Kameng on Tuesday emphasized on effective implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).<br \/>\nThe meeting also underscored the need to increase public awareness on harmful effects of tobacco use through awareness and publicity campaigns.<br \/>\nEAC Atin Padung, who presided over the meeting, assured the administration&#8217;s all-possible help and assistance in effective enforcement of COTPA and other existing relevant rules and norms.<br \/>\nAs per Global Adult Tobacco Survey&#8211;India, (2009-10), the prevalence of tobacco use in Arunachal Pradesh stood at 47.7 percent, informed State Project Officer (NTCP) Dr Biman Natung.<br \/>\nDr Natung also gave presentation on the disadvantages and harmful effects of tobacco use and its remedial measures.<br \/>\nApprising about the legal provisions enshrined under COTPA, 2003 and other relevant Acts pertaining to tobacco and its products, Dr Natung urged the representatives of the Education Department and market community to display standard posters exhibiting the messages of harmful effects of consumption of tobacco and its products in school premises and shops.<br \/>\nHighlighting roles and responsibilities of NGOs and different enforcement agencies, Dr Natung urged all stakeholders to extend their cooperation for proper implementation of the NTCP in the district for a tobacco-free society.<br \/>\nStating that tobacco is the single leading cause of preventable death in the world, District Project Officer (NTCP) Dr Kopi Gyadi informed that tobacco causes 5.4 million deaths every year, which is three times higher than the death caused by HIV infection.<br \/>\nHe also briefed on current scenario of tobacco consumption in the country, state and the district, achievement and activities carried out under NTCP by DTCC in East Kameng.<br \/>\nDMO Dr Kaya Lapung, Deputy SP S N Phaichelupa, medical officers, heads of offices, and other health staffs were present and took part in the discussion.
