Rain cripples life in Siang valley, north Assam

PASIGHAT, 4 Apr: Torrential rains have paralysed normal life in the Siang valley and adjoining parts of Dhemaji district of north Assam.

Incessant moderate to heavy rainfall has been lashing the region for the last five days, disrupting normal life and adversely affecting business activities as well as the preparations on the eve of Mopin festival.

Gusty winds accompanied by early spring showers lashed many areas in between Silapathar and Jonai on Sunday, damaging high-tension electric lines and snapping power supply in Jonai subdivision.

The heavy downpour also led to waterlogging at several locations and damaged Rabi crops in the region.

The rivers and streams flowing down the northern hills, which were drying up due to a long spell of drought, are awakened with the early spring showers. Rainfall-triggered landslides occurred in several portions of the Panging-Aalo road (Siang district) and the Pasighat-Mariyang highway (Upper Siang), hindering road communication.

However, PWD highways officials informed that the blocks on both the routes have been cleared and men and machines have been engaged to clear other roadblocks on the routes.

As per the weather data recorded by the College of Horticulture & Forestry here, the area on Monday recorded 33.84 mm rainfall – the highest in the last four days.
