Editor,

I would like to voice the collective sentiments of the people of Lower Siang district regarding the upcoming inauguration of the newly constructed district hospital in Likabali, scheduled for 6 February.

There is a unified demand across the district – endorsed by community-based organisations, student unions, senior leaders, and the general publicĀ  – to name this premier health institution in honour of late Kardu Taipodia, a former minister whose legacy in Arunachal Pradesh is undeniable.

As Lower Siang is a budding district with numerous developmental projects in the pipeline – including colleges, central schools (KV, JNV), and major road networks – it is crucial that we establish a respectful and systematic tradition for naming these public assets. We propose a naming convention based on seniority and contribution, honouring our leaders in a series that begins with late Rima Taipodia, followed by late Tako Dabi, late Kardu Taipodia, late Jomde Kena, Kento Rina and continuing to our present leadership, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyicyor and Tojir Kadu.

Naming the district hospital after late Kardu Taipodia is the logical and respectful next step in acknowledging this timeline of service.

However, it is a matter of grave concern that the district level naming committee has remained dormant. Despite explicit directions issued by the chief minister’s office as early as April 2025, the committee has yet to hold a single sitting to address this matter. This delay is inexplicable and disrespectful to the unified voice of the stakeholders.

With the inauguration just days away, we urge the district administration to immediately convene the naming committee. We appeal to the authorities to respect the public sentiment and officially finalise the name of the hospital as the Late Kardu Taipodia District Hospital before the ribbon is cut on 6 February.
