ITANAGAR, Jun 6: Botanical Survey of India (BSI) scientist Dr Krishna Chowlu, who discovered a new species of Impatiens – dorjeekhanduii, of the Balsaminaceae family – called on Chief Minister Pema Khandu here on Wednesday.
The new species, named after former chief minister (late) Dorjee Khandu, was discovered and collected from Zemithang in Tawang district in September last year.
Dr Chowlu said the Impatiens flower has been dedicated to the former chief minister to honour his contribution towards the development of the state.
“The name will be there in the scientific community forever, and whosoever will study the Balsaminaceae family in the world, will study Impatiens dorjeekhanduii,” she said.
Apart from Dr Chowlu, Drs Rajib Gogoi, SS Dash and Souravjyoti Borah of the BSI also contributed in the publication of this species.
The chief minister was all praise for Dr Chowlu and her team of scientists for discovering the new flower species.
Daughter of Chow P Chowlu and Nang B Chowlu, Dr Chowlu is the only scientist appointed from Arunachal Pradesh in the BSI through the UPSC.
A native of Namsai, Dr Chowlu has also discovered nine other plant species.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and Planning Parliamentary Secretary Zingnu Namchoom were also present during the meeting. (CMO)
