World Toilet Day

Dear Editor,
As we celebrated world toilet day on November 19, government’s initiative of constructing more and more toilets is laudable. But merely constructing more and more toilets is not going to be worthwhile if it is not in usable condition and only be statistical jugglery.
It is important to keep the existing toilets clean and usable with availability of clean water with regular maintenance. Also through hygiene education and regular awareness campaigns, people’s behaviour should be changed, which will make them use toilets instead of relieving themselves in public places, which will help India achieve its goal of becoming open defecation free by 2019.
Yours,
T.S.Karthik,
