Arunachal is a late starter in introducing railway service in the state. For year’s central government kept state out of railway map until Naharlagun-Harmuty stretch was constructed. Today state is connected with train service to cities like Guwahati and New Delhi. With gradual increase in number passenger, there is growing demand for train service from across the state. The railways are currently undertaking feasibility survey in several stretches including in Bhalukpong- Tawang sector. If indeed government of India manages to drastically improve rail connectivity in Arunachal, it will bring massive change in the transport sector.
The state government should push centre to start new train service connecting Naharlagun with rest of the India. Especially there is pressing need for train service between Naharlagun-Mumbai, Naharlagun-Kolkata and Naharlagun-Chennai. Every year large number of students and medical patients visit these cities. Also the government should revive the Hollongi Green Field Airport Project. This project is in limbo for last many years. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has shown sincerity to revive this project by repeatedly raising it with government of India. But more need to be done to speed up the Green Field airport project. Itanagar is the only capital in whole of North East region not to have airport of its own. State government should start dialogue process with land owners at Hollongi and work out the compensation issue which is considered to be one of the main reasons for delaying the project. Sincere effort should be made to revive the airport project in the greater interest of the state.
