An Itanagar based NGO Ajing United Club (AUC) has raised the pertinent issue of the need for a separate ground to conduct festivals and events in capital complex. At present most of the private as well as government events are conducted at Indira Gandhi Park. The condition of the lone park of state capital is deteriorating and it needs to be protected. Due to rapid urbanization the capital complex is losing its charm. Once considered to be one of the greenest capitals of country today twin town of Itanagar and Naharlagun is an urban nightmare.
Polo Park located at Naharlagun is slowly vanishing due to encroachment. State government miserably failed to protect it. IG Park is the only recreational place where people like to go out with family for walk and also to spend some quality time amidst greenery. But it too is a victim of encroachment. Day by day the park is getting small. Government should seriously consider the suggestion for acquiring a new plot of land which can be developed as a permanent festival/event ground. Also permanent structure should be constructed so that government does not have to spend money to conduct events like Festival of Arunachal, Independence Day, Republic day etc. The suggestion put forward by NGO Ajing United Club needs to be seriously considered.
