The report of increase in number of wild life population at Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary (DEWS) is encouraging and should inspire the conservation movement in Arunachal. Spread over an area of 190 square kilometers, DEWS is located in Siang belt. The locales inhabiting in and around sanctuary were once known to be fierce hunter. The wild life populations were on the decrease until forest department intervene and launched an effective conservation movement. A lot of credit goes to department of environment and forest for the success.
They took strong measures to stop hunting activities. Several arrests have been made and weapons confiscated. The prosecution of illegal hunters has sent out strong message to others to keep away from DEWS. The local people of east Siang district also deserves appreciation for extending cooperation to the officials of forest department to protect DEWS. The success of Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary can be emulated by rest of the state. Nature has abundantly blessed Arunachal with rich flora and fauna. But the gift of nature needs protection so that it is conserved for the future generation. The inspiring success story of DEWS and Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary shows that if forest department and local community join hand together then conservation movement achieves definite success.
