The participation of Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu at World Hindu Congress in Chicago, United States of America has divided opinion of the nation. BJP and its greater Sangh parivar member have defended the move while opposition parties have slammed the move. The oppositions have questioned how Mr Naidu can participate in such program to share dais with RSS and VHP leaders while holding the constitutional position of a secular country and that too on government’s expenditure.
The World Hindu Congress is a global platform for Hindus to connect and share ideas to inspire one another and impact the common good. Already the event has run into trouble with controversial ‘lion and dog’ remark of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat. Mr M Venkaiah Naidu before becoming the vice president of India has been a long time member of BJP and is naturally aligned to the ideology of Hindutva. But he should remember that after holding the office of vice president, which is a constitutional post, the person has to severe tie with his past political party and its ideological group. Therefore opposition parties are certainly right to question his move to attend the World Hindu Congress that too at the expense of the public exchequer. This is a wrong trend. Tomorrow if others holding constitutional starts attending events of Islam, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist etc citing example of Mr Naidu, how will government stop them. In a secular country like India those holding the constitutional posts should avoid attending such religious conference for the betterment of nation.
