KHONSA, Nov 8: The maiden district level sports meet (U-16) here in Tirap under the ‘Khelo India’ programme was kicked off at Nehru Stadium on Saturday.
Around 1000 athletes of both sexes are participating in the weeklong meet.
The events of the sports meet include athletics, badminton, football, judo, karate, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and wushu, informed District Sports Officer N Mongku.
Attending the inauguration function, MLA W Sawin advised the players to take up sports sincerely and grab the opportunity of job reservation for meritorious sportspersons in government departments.
Stating that discipline is the key to success in anyone’s life, Sawin asked the athletes to maintain strong discipline and sportsmanship.
Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon encouraged the young players to play sports as the state government is giving importance to this sector.
“Cash incentives are also given by the state government to those sportspersons who win medals at regional, national and international level competitions,” he added.
Tirap SP JK Meena urged the young generation to abstain from drug abuse and concentrate on education and sports for a bright future.
