For the last two days Congress workers and section of media are in euphoric mood ever since it was announced that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been appointed as the new general secretary of Congress. This was a surprise considering the fact that for long she has rebuffed the calls to enter politics. The general election is just two months away and her entering politics that too as in charge of Uttar Pradesh where the Congress is almost non-existent is a huge gamble. She is considered a more charismatic campaigner than her brother, the current Congress party chief, Rahul Gandhi, with presence and an appearance that are often compared to that of her grandmother Indira Gandhi, a formidable and controversial prime minister, who was assassinated in 1984.
But the big question is whether she will be able to turn around the fortune of Congress in UP. It is still early days but Congress and its supporters will be committing huge mistake if they think that party will win more seats with the introduction of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She faces huge challenge in UP in the form of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP-SP alliance. However there is no denying that her formal entry into politics could boost Congress party momentum in the coming election. Whether that will translate into vote is something that everyone will have to wait and see. To negate any potential question mark on her credibility, the Congress president Rahul Gandhi declared that she has been appointed not just for general election and has been given the bigger task of reviving party in UP with long term vision. But still the results matter in democracy.
