ITANAGAR, Mar 23: Sitting Mariyang-Geku MLA Olom Panyang on Saturday joined the Janata Dal (United) and has decided to opt out of the assembly election this time.
The development came after the JD (U) came out with its final list of candidates, which now includes Kanggong Taku and Talem Taboh.
Taku will be contesting for the Mariyang-Geku seat, and Taboh will contest for the Rumgong seat.
Speaking to reporters after his joining, Panyang said he would now extend his support to Taku, who is set to contest for the assembly election to Mariyang-Geku on the JD (U) ticket.
He said, “His (Taku) contesting for the constituency is the same as me contesting, and I will extend my full support to him.”
On not getting the BJP ticket, Panyang said the public of the constituency was upset with the decision.
“The decision to give the party ticket was upon the core group to take, but the public is upset, and we will now have a straight fight with the BJP,” he added.
The BJP has fielded Anong Perme as its candidate for Mariyang-Geku.
With its final list out, the JD (U) will be fielding a total of 15 candidates this assembly election.
Prominent names include sitting MLAs Techi Kaso (Itanagar), Dikto Yekar (Daporijo), and several others.
