KOLORIANG, Aug 8: Kurung Kumey DC Santosh Kumar Rai on Thursday called for “effective awareness generation” among schoolchildren and the public about the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Chairing a meeting of the district level coordination committee on the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) here, the DC said awareness should be generated to ensure effective implementation of the act in the district.
DMO Dr Gumjum Ete spoke about the objective behind implementing the NTCP in the district, while DPO (NTCP) Dr Boni Tuluk presented an overview of the NTCP, which was launched by the Centre in 2007-08 to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption, reduce the production and supply of tobacco, etc.
The DPO also highlight the COTPA and the declaration of office premises and other areas as tobacco-free zones.
DDSE Giogi Kaha advocated banning production and supply of tobacco. District TB Officer Dr Khioram Bagang also spoke.
