Prevention of drug abuse among children discussed

ITANAGAR, 20 Apr: Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) DC Talo Potom convened a meeting at his office here on Thursday to discuss prevention of drugs and substance abuse among children in the ICR district, “as per the guidelines of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.”

During the meeting, ICDS Deputy Director Aroti Tayeng threw light on the current status of drug abuse among children in the capital region.

Tamchi Taniang, speaking on behalf of the DDSE, informed about the campaigns carried out by the education department vis-à-vis drug abuse among children in primary and secondary schools.

He suggested to the authority to appoint a nodal officer, “preferably a principal/headmaster, at the school level to identify the children who are in need of help.”

JJB LBO Tarh Nagu highlighted the need for government rehab centres in the ICR, and said that “the current reported cases are mostly being taken up at private rehab centres, which becomes a costly affair for the patients’ families.”

He also mentioned that there is no exclusive female rehab centre in the ICR.

Tax & Excise Inspector Tayem Jomoh presented a brief on the status of the CCTV installation campaign and banning of tobacco products in the vicinity of educational institutions.

The DC directed that “the data in compliance with the joint action plan indicator is to be collected and submitted to the district administration, following which a meeting will be held to discuss further course of action.”

Among others, ADC (HQ) Shweta Nagarkoti, Capital ASP Thutan Jamba, and DMO Dr Mandip Perme attended the meeting. (DIPRO)
