Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor Tamme Phassang during a mass cleanliness drive held in several wards here on Saturday informed that fines will be imposed on those who litter public spaces. This should not just remain a simple announcement. The IMC seriously needs to work out a way to take strong action against those who litter. The Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) is one of the dirtiest towns in the country. The marketplaces are very dirty and people litter the roads with garbage. There is a complete lack of civic sense among the citizens, which is deeply worrying.
The IMC along with the ICR administration also needs to look into the issue of lack of public toilets. Most of the marketplaces do not have proper clean public toilets. Often, embarrassingly, people can be seen urinating in public spaces. There is an urgent need for proper clean public toilets. Another serious issue is the release of drains into rivers and streams without proper treatment. People living near the rivers are the main culprits. The IMC and the ICR administration should take the initiative to protect the rivers of the ICR. Now that Phassang has announced that IMC will impose fines on those who litter, the people of the ICR will be closely watching to see when the IMC will turn this announcement into reality. The earlier it does, the better it will be for the ICR.
