Editor,
As the festive season approaches, it’s time we address the glaring issue of traffic rule enforcement in Arunachal Pradesh. The state has become a mockery when it comes to wearing helmets and following basic traffic rules. Despite laws mandating helmets for both the rider and the pillion rider, it’s common to see riders without helmets, especially the pillion riders, who rarely wear them. In fact, most riders only wear helmets to pass police checkpoints or during surprise traffic checks.
What’s more alarming is that the traffic police, despite their presence, seem to ignore the pillion rider’s safety, allowing them to travel without helmets while only focusing on the rider. In neighbouring states like Assam and Meghalaya, helmets are mandatory for both the rider and the pillion rider, but in Arunachal the rules seem to be applied half-heartedly, with enforcement mainly limited to raising penalties.
This neglect of traffic rules is a serious concern, especially during the festive season when road accidents increase. I urge the authorities concerned to implement the law effectively and ensure that both riders and pillion passengers are equally protected by mandatory helmet laws. It’s time to treat traffic rules with the seriousness they deserve.
