Do not spare the corrupt

On Tuesday, under intense pressure from the people of the state, the education department suspended Block Education Officers (BEOs) Iken Bagra and Posi Gamlin, who were posted in West Siang district. Along with Bagra and Gamlin, two other department officials, Tanyang Gaduk and Radek Romin, who were arrested and suspended for their alleged involvement in the question paper leak scam, were reinstated following a court order. The news of their reinstatement sparked a massive uproar in the state.

Now that the department has re-suspended them and assured strong action against all those accused in the paper leak scam, the people of the state will be closely watching every step of the education department. The department should not stop at suspensions; the individuals involved in the paper leak scam should be terminated from service. They have destroyed the lives of thousands of youths by orchestrating a large-scale job scam. While the main criminal case is being investigated by the CBI, the least the department can do is terminate the service of all individuals involved in the scam. In light of the education department’s lapses, other departments should also ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
