Editor,
As a woman, I was shocked when I saw the video in which Talo Potom, deputy commissioner of the capital, claimed that “no girls came to sleep with him,” and further alleged that the public of Daporijo had “offered him girls” – two on each side, two on top, and two at the bottom. These remarks are extremely disrespectful to women and derogatory.
Although Mr Talo Potom said that his statement was just for entertainment for the public and not intentional, the damage to the majority of women has been done.
Women not only play the role of wife, daughter, and mother in a family, but also play an important role in various fields, such as academics, administration, sports or public service. The happiness of a family can’t be separated from the efforts of women, and the progress of society can’t be separated from the contributions and participation of women. Women have made great contributions not only to the development of Upper Subansiri district, but also Arunachal Pradesh.
At any time, topics about women shouldn’t be treated as jokes, especially by public figures who represent not individuals, but the image of the government or institutions. Disrespecting women is equivalent to disrespecting one’s wife, daughter, and mother. Every woman deserves respect and should be respected!
