GEKU, 10 Mar: A training programme on floriculture, along with an input distribution programme under the NEH component was organised at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) here in Upper Siang district on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by the floriculture and landscaping department of Pasighat (E/Siang)-based College of Horticulture and Forestry (CHF), in collaboration with the KVK, and was funded by Pune (Maharashtra)-based Directorate of Floricultural Research.
The programme aimed to create awareness among farmers, rural youths and flower enthusiasts about the scope, prospects and entrepreneurial opportunities in floriculture. “Floriculture is emerging as a promising sector in horticulture with potential for income generation, value addition and employment opportunities,” the KVK informed in a release.
CHF Floriculture HoD Dr Sunil Kumar delivered an informative lecture on the prospects and scope of floriculture and the cultivation potential of gerbera as a high-value commercial flower crop. He emphasised the importance of scientific cultivation practices, protected cultivation, and market opportunities for the farmers in the region.
Adding a creative touch to the programme, CHF floriculture and landscaping lab assistant Sudipta Bhowmick conducted a demonstration on bouquet making, showing how simple floral arrangements can transform flowers into expressions of art and entrepreneurship.
The programme also included an interactive session, during which the participants engaged with the experts, shared their experiences, and had their doubts related to nursery management and marketing clarified.
Falcon garden tool sets were distributed to the participants to support their practical involvement in floriculture activities. Certificates of participation were also awarded in recognition of their enthusiastic participation.
“The awareness programme not only celebrated the beauty of flowers but also opened doors to new possibilities, inspiring farmers of Upper Siang to look at floriculture not just as cultivation, but as a blooming pathway towards livelihood and prosperity,” the KVK said.
