DOIMUKH, 2 Apr: As part of its annual CSR initiatives, the Arunachal Sociological Forum (ASF), in collaboration with the NSS unit of the Government College Doimukh (GCD), organised an outreach programme on gender sensitisation here recently.

During the programme, RGU Sociology Assistant Professor Dr Nani Umie spoke on ‘Gender sensitisation: Building an inclusive perspective and social responsibility’. She dwelt on the various challenges women face in Arunachal Pradesh, and underscored the importance of cultivating an inclusive mindset in daily behaviour, as meaningful change can only occur with self-awareness.

Expanding on the theme, NERIST Psychology Assistant Professor Dr Yuma Narah spoke on ‘Understanding LGBTQIAP+ identities: Foundations in gender, sexuality and psychological wellbeing’. She highlighted the complexities of gender identities and sexual orientation, emphasising their broad spectrum. Her insights stressed the significance of promoting diversity and empathy in the community.

The event also saw participation of several other academic faculties, such as GCD Principal (i/c) Dr DK Jha, Economics HoD Dr Dakli Lombi, and History Assistant Professor Dr Eva Dupak.

To engage the students, an essay competition was held, focusing on critical themes such as gender-based violence, polygamy, gender representation in media, and gender representation in politics.

Around 20 students from various departments of GCD participated in the programme.

Nabam Nancy, a 2nd semester geography student, won the first prize, while Ankush Paul and Niri Mania, both 6th semester economics students, earned the second and the third prize, respectively.

The programme concluded with the planting of tree saplings on the college grounds.

The ASF, founded in 1999, is a collaborative platform for academicians, researchers, and students in Arunachal’s sociology community. It focuses on advancing sociology through teaching, research, and community outreach, addressing contemporary social issues.
