ITANAGAR, Sep 17: Around 15 private residences and large areas of paddy fields were damaged during cloudburst-triggered flashfloods and landslides which occurred at around 9-9:30 am here in Leparada district on Thursday.
Overflowing waters of the Hie and the Kidi rivers entered houses, damaged properties, and submerged paddy fields in the low-lying areas.
Leparada EAC Murnya Kakki informed The Arunachal Times that no casualty has been reported in the district and all the people staying in the low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer places.
“Some have been shifted to the government secondary school, while others have left to stay with relatives,” he said, adding that Chirney area is the most affected.
“Flashfloods also damaged the houses of labourers staying near the paddy fields in Chirney area, while the paddy fields near the confluence of the Hie and the Kidi rivers in Nyodu area were also submerged. A rented apartment was damaged in Kamdak area near the petrol pump. Also, one house in Upper Colony was partially damaged in a landslide. Fortunately, the occupants managed to escape and no one was hurt,” the EAC said.
He informed that rain-triggered landslides have also cut off Sago circle from the district headquarters.
Kakki said the authorities have already ordered the department concerned to clear the road to resume communication at the earliest.
“Kamdak road, lying between Likabali and Basar road, where new formation-cutting work was going on, has also suffered damages. New formation-cutting needs to be done, which may take one to two days,” he said.
