ITANAGAR, Sep 16: Arunachal Pradesh joined the rest of the world in observing World Ozone Day on Saturday.
Organised by the Department of Environment and Forest at the conference hall of the PCCF office in Itanagar, Principal Secretary cum Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Omkar Singh said that urbanisation, setting of industries, factories and felling of trees has adversely affected the ozone layer.
“We are damaging the ozone layers in many ways, and we need to protect it as the UV rays are not only harmful for human beings, but for animals and plants as well. We are equally responsible for its setback and we have to act upon it to reduce pollution and emission of harmful gases”, he said.
He also gave tips on how to begin saving the ozone layer, and asked everyone to save electricity, cooking gas, and switch off vehicles in traffic if it stands for more than a minute.
Singh requested the organisers to conduct similar programmes in different parts of the state to create awareness on saving the ozone layers and its preventives measures.
Director Environment, T Sitag said that the day is being organised with the theme, “Caring for all life under the Sun”, with emphasis on creating awareness among the youth.
An interaction session was also held where students of Guardian Angel School, Itanagar cleared their doubts.
A PowerPoint presentation was also given by Deputy Director Environment, Dohu Robin on the ozone layer.
