GUWAHATI, May 11: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has rejected the imposition of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and declared that all its state units across the Northeast will hold an agitation against the bill on 21 May.
Reframing its strategy in a meeting here on Friday, the NESO affirmed that all the seven states of the Northeast are united on the decision.
Also announcing a series of agitation against the bill, the NESO sought an update of the National Register of Citizens in other Northeastern states, along with special constitutional status for the Northeast.
It also demanded for a common Inner Line Permit for the entire Northeast region, and bilateral treaty with Bangladesh to deport the illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, the proposed sit-in protest for Friday was postponed, and will now be held on Saturday at Dighalipukri, Guwahati.
The NESO will be joined by all its component units of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, All Assam Students’ Union, All Manipur Students’ Union, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo students union), Garo Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation and the Twipra Students’ Federation.
