AALO, Sep 21: Street vendor identity (ID) cards were issued to over 3000 women of West Siang district during an orientation workshop on the Deendayal Antodaya Yojana and the National Urban Livelihood Mission organized by the urban development & housing (UDH) department at Gumin Kiin here on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner Sode Potom highlighted the crucial role played by the street vendors in meeting consumers’ demands, particularly for local vegetables, fruits, meat and fishes, and in improving the rural economy.
“Besides, they provide a source of income to their households,” he said.
The DC said the UDH department is making its best effort to help the street vendors, “so that they can sell their items in more spacious and hygienic condition.”
He also urged them to be an integral a part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
UDH Deputy Director Hally Welly and UPO Nyatum Bagra dwelt on the measures being initiated by the department for the welfare of the street vendors.
DFWO Dr Tomar Kamki spoke on food safety, health and hygiene, while advocate Gumli Bagra presented a brief on the AP Street Vendor (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2011.
The president of the vendors’ association highlighted the problems faced by the vendors in different localities of the district. (DIPRO)
